For Shadowdark and other Tabletop RPGs.
These are notes primarily derived from looking at well liked 1-page adventures for Shadowdark such as *The Wavestone Monolith*.
# Title
A good title makes it easy for people to talk about it. The title should be unique and evocative of the contents of the adventure. For example, *The Wavestone Monolith* doesn't really tell you much on the surface, but it makes use of proper nouns and terms that evoke mystery and suspense. Good titles are easy to find on search engines.
# Subtitle
The subtitle should be something the DM can say verbatim to the players. Consider it a tagline for the adventure. It should provide inspiration for how the players might have ended up on the adventure, ie. could be used as a rumor or a warning that ties it into another adventure.
# Overview
The introduction gives a high level overview of what the adventure is about. Good introductions include descriptions of the environment the dungeon/adventure is in. Great introductions include brief descriptions that inspire dungeon masters to tie the adventure into their existing campaign (or at least take this adventure off the shelf when it's time to prep).
# Random Encounters
Not all random encounters need to be combat. Rely on rolling on Reaction tables (distance, activity, distance) to add flavor to these. If you're going to add an additional layer of random effect, aim for using a d4 or d6 and describe the activity for a roll (range). For example:
| D4 | Encounter |
| --- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 1 | 3 x Giant Spiders, d4 1-2: wrapping up a suspicious looking bundle in silk; 3-4: laying still above a bundle of eggs |
# Reward
Most adventures should have a single, big reward for completing the adventure. This rewards should be worthwhile and interesting. Aim for completely custom items, not something from a loot manual. Should give unusual or otherwise impossible abilities. There are no rules. The item should generally be useful throughout the course of the dungeon, they players are likely (but not guaranteed) to find it before completing the dungeon.
